Riad Saloojee from The Council on American-Islamic Relations talks about some of the reasons behind media bias, namely ownership and structure. In Canada most of our media is owned by one family-run corporation, so the news we get is filtered through a very specific world-view. Media is structured so that conflict and cataclysms get most of the attention. Saloojee points out that despite all this there are a great number of very principled journalists and we can find ways to use the media to effect positive change.
