This film was created by English & Social Studies students at Lucerne Secondary School New Denver, as part of their curriculum in learning about the history of the Japanese Canadian Internment during WWII.
The following is their Artist Statement:
We learned a lot of things we never knew about our own interment even though it was based right in our own town. We learned that people were strongly discriminated against. We also realized how strong and positive the Japanese-Canadians were, when what happened to them was so wrong. The fact that the Japanese Canadians were made to leave their homes, give away almost everything, lose their identity, forced to be called enemy aliens and move to a different place just because of the colour of their skin was terrible and upsetting. When we watched the films and got a better idea of what happened during the interment it made us sad and upset that people could be treated like that especially by Canadians. We want people to realize that Canada is a really good place, but there have also been bad things that people don’t want to accept the reality that it happened.
