Born in Point Noir, Republic of the Congo, the coast is not the only similarity Sylvestre finds between his place of origin and what he calls his “adoptive home,’ Cape Town. Sylvestre suggests that xenophobia is not at all unique to South Africa and that there are common issues shared in multicultural communities around the world. Sylvestre highlights the role of some media in contributing to xenophobia.
Sylvestre’s unique perspective challenges people from all backgrounds to move beyond the ‘passive spectator’ position, into active engagement with others as an essential step to living peacefully together.
