Grocery shopping didn't used to be this hard.

For years I've had a weekend ritual, sitting at our dining room table, surrounded by cookbooks and cooking magazines, planning a week's worth of meals and drawing up a shopping list.

But for the past few weeks what used to be an enjoyable half hour has turned into a stressful damned-if-I-do damned-if-I-don't experience. That's what I get for reading.

It all started with Michael Pollan.

I love his food writing, devoured one of his recent books - The Omnivore's Dilemma - and was inspired by an Earth Day article he wrote to plant a vegetable garden in our shady back yard this spring.

But thanks to Pollan, an American author and frequent New York Times contributor, I can't pick up a carton of eggs without thinking of chickens crammed into tiny cages...
